In June of 2002 I fell on a slippery substance. My leg went completely backwards at the knee. This injury caused a torn acl/pcl and there was also some artery damage. The surgeon indicated that it was the worst injury that he had seen to a non athletic person. I had to have reconstructive knee surgery. No surgery on the damaged artery as of yet. My surgery took 5 hours. The surgeon used allograph tissue to repair the damaged ligaments. Today, I am almost 5 months out of surgery and still having physical therapy 3 times a week. It has been really hard gaining back my range of motion. I can only bend my leg to about a 94 degree angle. It is anticipated that I should be able to gain full range of motion which should be around 120-140 degree angle according to the therapist. We have reached a point in therapy where I have not gained a degree in the last 3 weeks. If anyone has any suggestions for helping me gain more range of motion please let me know.

5 weeks ago I had three tears repaired in the left meniscus and one tear in the right meniscus. It was discovered that I had no ACL in my left knee, it having been torn back in a football accident back in 1968 which occured while I was in college. I wondered after I was told of this 4 days after surgery why the doctor did not repair this old injury at the time he was in the knee repairing the three tears. I am trying to determine if I should have this ACL also repaired or live with it. That's why I was looking at your site. Do you have a recommendation? I am 55 and still playing basketball and baseball in the senior leagues.

At last - information on joint PCL/ACL rupture - I was beginning to think that I was the only person to have suffered these simultaneously! My consultant told me 4 yrs ago that I should just have physio and try a more sedentary lifestyle, but now I have children and would like to play football with them or even (dare I hope) take them skiing one day. Could you make any suggestions as to someone I could talk to? I understand that you are probably too busy to reply personally, but any assistance would be received most gratefully.

Dear Dr Kruzlifix,I am a senior Roche executive who spent 96 and 97 residing in your gorgeous hometown of Basel.During a skiing accident in Verbier,Switzerland last March I completely tore my left knee ACL which will requre reconstruction if I ever want to ski or play tennis competitively again.I am 60 years of age and in very good shape. My surgeon tells me that my age is not an impediment for this type of a procedure. He wants to use the the hamstring tendon technique with the bioabsorbable interference screws.Do you agree that my age is not an issue and that the technique proposed is the best one available at this time.Best Regards Eric Lodewijk

Completely tore ACL March 2000 and I am still able to jog five miles a day and bike ride. I strapped on a brace recently and have been playing basketball (returning to the scene of the "crime" so to speak) but reality is setting in. I don't live in pain, there's no swelling and I have full range of motion. I am at the point where I don't know if the cure will be worse that the "disease" (surgery). Site is very informative and will assist me in making a more educated decision. I would really appreciate hearing anyone who has had the surgery. Is anyone out there competing again at 100% capacity afterwards? Does anyone regret having the surgery or feel they were better-off not having it? Please advise. Thanks.

An Orhto last week told me that I had a perfect shoulder MRI - inspite of the chronic pain. today my family Dr. called after having read the Radiology Report which stated that I had a "metallic artifact present at the distal acromion. This may represent residual metal shavings from the previous 1994 surgery." I am shocked that I would NOT be told this. My Dr. is sending me for a Second Ortho opinion....wonder what this metal could be doing to me???? - Judy

I have recently been diagnosed with a complete tear of the ACL and aside from post injury rehab, I am trying to get educated on surgical options to pursue. Your site has helped me obtain a much better understanding of the anatomy and operative techniques available. As a result, I feel much better prepared to engage doctors on this subject. Thanks so much. David A. Arko

Hallo Andreas Das Quer erinnert mich an ein Stück gemeinsame Geschichte: Balgrist, Irak und Basel. Mir gehts gut. Und wie gehts Dir? Ich arbeite viel und auch zuviel. Hi there, I found your web site by accident and really enjoyed it. I was looking for a detailed map of Basel but was happy to take a few minutes to enjoy your love of Harleys, Bow Ties, kids, and (Dentistry?). WOW! I have been to Basel many times and enjoy it completely. Hope you are getting lots of snow in the Mountains. By the way, can you tell me the name of the artist that created that large mechanical water splashing sculpture that is a block or two above Barfusserplatz? It is the one that looks so interesting in the winter when the ice covers it and the water flow creates ice designs. Best regards, Carl Dietz

The pictures on this site are so cool. I have had three ACL surgeries and a month ago I got to watch an ACL Reconstruction. My first two were done with patellar tendon and the third was the patellar tendon from a cadaver. I am trying to do a paper for my Sports Med class and I found some good stuff on this site. Thanks!

Wahrscheinlich was Medizinisches. So, nix mehr schwafeln, sondern backen!

Hello, I had patellar tendon acl surgery in July. After completing 3 months of physical therapy, I was left to my devices to strengthen quads, etc. by bicycling, hiking, etc. In mid November a slip and fall caused my knee to flex and my patella broke in three pieces. Is this a common occurence in post acl surgery patience? Could I have done anything to have prevented this fropm occurring? Can you reccommend a rehhabilitation program that will get me back to my active lifestyle and perhaps spare me, or lessen my chance of, any other related injuries? Thank You, Stephen Sauve

I have sent an e-mail requesting help, from the backwoods here[!] Equally, I am very excited by the potential offered - and we at RBH in Reading are attempting something comparable - just that it is in the early stages, and aimed somewhat differently. Great, enjoyed the variations, appreciate the work involved, may just be that we end with a useful site, and include you as a link [see what the Consultant opinion concludes!] - minor point - much is not in English [my insularity, apologies!], and it can be difficult to navigate the site with limited time. I look forward to exploring and benefitting from your experience. ;-)) Ross

Hi Andreas Thank you for allowing me to come and operate with you in Basel. It was a fantastic oppurtunity for me to see you doing the all inside technique. I have spoken to Dr Lim in Western Australia and he is going to do a lateral ligament reconstruction on friday and has asked for any surgical tips you may have. He also asked is there a correct graph length to use? Do you also use the 4.0mm dilator before inserting the screw in this procedure? and lastly do you tension the graft in this procedure?. How was your trip to Italy. I hope all went well. Thanks again kind regards Sharon

Herr Staehelin, I was searching for websites on bow ties and came across your history page. Very informative and, at times, humorous. As I browsed your pages, I found that we have at least one more common interest. I, too have had my ACL reconstructed using the patellar tendon. Does this make me special? Of course not, but I was struck by the coincidence. I made my first bow tie using your pictoral instructions and was very pleased! I do, however have a question that I have had trouble getting an answer to. However, I do not think that I used the proper lining. What type of lining do you suggest? Also, do you use silk or other fabric types? I'm not meaning to take up much of your time. Just enough to, again, express my enjoyment of your websites. Sincerely yours, Scott

Hi there. I've just clicked by your webpage.
I know an Korean archaeologist who always wears bow ties. Bow ties are very rare in Korea, so I asked why he wears them. He said he prefers them to regular neck ties because neck ties get in the way and when you wear a neck tie you run the risk of knocking a historical artifact off the table and on to the floor. One day, he was given an award by our university. The president of the university gave him a neck tie with the school emblem on it. Strangely, the next day, he was wearing a bow tie with the school emblem on it, so I asked him where he bought it, forgetting that he had been given a neck tie of the same design the day before.... He said, quite proudly, that he had taken the neck tie the president gave him and made it into not one but two bow ties.
I've already uncut a neck tie that I don't want anymore. I'm going to try to make it into a bow tie by follow your instructions. I'm concerned that the neck tie, even when unsewn, won't be wide enough, but it's worth a try. I'll let you know what happens. In meantime, thank you for your informative site. Bonjour.... I really appreciate you article about the PCL.....would please give me more details about the tunnels , the bundles , the position of the insertion of the screws . there is some contradictions between the text and the schemas.... In the text page3 and according to the figures: the antero lateral bundle(gracilis) is in the inferior fémoral socket and the second screw (in the tibia) is screwed in the tibia in position of extention. The other bundle is in the superior tunnel (semi tendinous) is fixed in flexion near 90° with the third screw... but in the Summary, the semitendinous is called as anterolateral bundle....and the gracilis as the posteromedial one.... and finally do use one or two screws in the tibia...... thanks merci Dr TALHA

Hi Jody! For our next skiing day we would like to have you as a personal instructor for Paragliding, Snowboard and Skiing. For supper we want to enjoy your favourite bagels à la Staehelin and maybe you could give us a lift back on your Harley. Is it necessary to wear a bow tie? If yes we could make a Pädi-intern competition for the nicest model. As a first price we would suggest to have a further look in your weddingalbum. Is this a deal? Enjoy your holidays and see you! Who could be the author of this funny joke? It's a puzzle for your holidays. A hint: Two have left but one is still here but now on holidays when you come back. And by the way we would like to say bye bye and wish you all the best. P.S. Your apple pie is really good!

I completely tore my ACL off from one end 2 weeks ago playing baseball. Since then, I've had telescopic surgery to remove bone fragments, and a surgery to attempt to re-attach the ligament to the bone. This was unsuccessful, as the ligament was too far gone and came apart in the surgeons hand. I am now going to have reconstructive surgery in about 3 months. Any advice from you people that have knowledge and/or have been through this would be most welcome. Thanks alot.

I recently tore my right ACL playing Ice Hockey. I was referred to your site by Dr. Richard Strain of Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Fl. He is going to use the hamstring method to repair my ACL. After not understanding completly what goes on during the surgery, it was refreshing to see your website. I now feel much more confident about the surgery and look foward to the rehab and resuming my hockey "career".

Hi. My name is Scott Ptacnik and I would like to thank you for producing such an informative site. I am just finishing up my term paper on this subject. I under went the Patellar Tendon reconstructive surgery about 6 months ago and figured it would make a great subject. I was wondering what your profession is because, to be franked if you are in any way associated with the medical field you would make an excellent source. If you are not associated with medicine I would be interested in knowing were you recieved your information. If you could just write me back a quick e-mail answering my question I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for your time. Scott Ptacnik

Wonderful!! I was referred to your page via a link to Cruciate Ligament reconstruction and was impressed by your presentation of information. I had to read the History...and not only is it enlightening, it's truly a fun read. I live near Baltimore (Ellicott City) and of course am familiar with JHU. Did you really windsurf across the harbor in a tux? Guess you did...that's the aquarium in the background. I guess the destruction of the human body must run in the blood of Ortho surgeons... mine rides steeplechase events at 58... you ride Harleys. Thanks for the info on your page and the fun I had reading your bowtie history. I don't usually comment on web pages, but your arthro photos were so good and the history so much fun I felt the need to say thanks! gary

I was looking for illustrations of ACL surgery for a talk tomorrow, and found your site. Great, I feel I hit the jackpot. Thanks! A.R.
